PR: Remembering Srebrenica

Remembering Srebrenica (RS) is the UK charity that organises the UK’s Srebrenica Memorial Day events on 11 July, the EU-wide day of remembrance for the victims of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide. In 2013 RS organised its inaugural event at Lancaster House, London. In doing so the UK became the first country within the EU to recognise and actively mark Srebrenica Memorial Day outside of Bosnia.

2014 brought 23 events taking place across the UK forming Remembering Srebrenica Memorial Week (RSMW), culminating in Srebrenica Memorial Day on Friday 11 July.

Parasol Marketing undertook the PR for Remembering Srebrenica Memorial Week

Over a very intense month a range of PR activities were undertaken to help promote RSMW events:

Senior Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and Minister for Faith and Communities at the Department for Communities and Local Government, Rt Hon Baroness Sayeeda Warsi hosted and spoke at the event. The President of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bakir Izetbegović was among a range of additional speakers.

Constant liaison was necessary with the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) who part fund RS, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, who support RS.

The National Museum of Wales played host to Wales’ first Srebrenica Memorial event, whilst Bute House, Edinburgh led the events on Srebrenica Memorial Day itself.
Luton, Birmingham, and Blackburn Cathedral were just some of the locations hosting a wide range of community events that were attended by the Bosnian community and invited guests. The large majority were organised by former Lessons from Srebrenica delegates, an education programme that takes delegations to Bosnia & Herzegovina to witness first hand the effects of the genocide, and the wider impact that hatred can have on society.

Islam Channel producing a live commemoration programme on Srebrenica Memorial Day 11 July, featuring interviews filmed at the Lancaster House event, and a live feed from Bosnia + Al Jazeera Balkans + BBC Radio Scotland + Asian Lite to name just a few
